What are some common signs of age discrimination?

You’d think that workplace discrimination would be a thing of the past, but that simply isn’t the case. In fact, it seems like workplace discrimination is more common now than ever. Part of that may be attributable to individuals being more cognizant of their rights, but there are still a lot of people out there who struggle to realize when they’ve been treated unfairly on the job. One common type of workplace discrimination that is often overlooked is age discrimination.

Signs of age discrimination

Age discrimination can wreck careers and livelihoods in a sneaky fashion. If you’re over the age of 40, then you should be on the lookout for the following signs that you’ve been discriminated against based on your age:

  • You’re passed over for promotions and more meaningful assignments and those assignments are instead given to younger, less experienced employees.
  • Your employer used coded language to talk about how stubborn you are or to demonstrate how much they value younger workers, such as by indicating that they’re more energized or how the company could benefit from “fresher faces.”
  • You’re left out of important meetings or are cut off from key information while younger workers aren’t.
  • Older individuals are more frequently the subject of adverse employment actions.
  • Your supervisor made assumptions about your abilities solely based on your age.

Are you ready to hold your employer accountable for age discrimination?

If you think that you’ve been subjected to age discrimination, then you should prepare yourself to take legal action. Doing so is the only way to find accountability and recover compensation for the damage that’s been caused to you.
